Successful energy efficiency programs for commercial foodservice achieve greater market transformation by placing a strong emphasis on education, outreach, and financial incentives. From the technical to the educational, the FSTC has the experience and knowledge to build robust foodservice energy efficiency programs from the ground up.
The FSTC created the definitive commercial foodservice equipment qualified product list for the California Investor-Owned Utilities' statewide rebate program. We can help strengthen your foodservice rebate programs with custom qualified equipment lists and supplemental energy-saving tools. We also develop and maintain workpapers for prospective and existing equipment measures.
Based on our extensive lab and field research, we have built educational seminars, webinars, and training session packages tailored for utility field representatives, restaurant operators and chefs, equipment dealers, and manufacturer representatives.
Our energy efficiency experts take a holistic approach to new or retrofit commercial kitchen projects. This includes analysis of all kitchen systems (appliances, lighting, ventilation, and water heating) that can help customers optimize their facility design and determine the best energy-efficient options available.
The FSTC is an independent EPA-recognized fuel-neutral test laboratory capable of testing a wide range of foodservice equipment from ovens and fryers to dishmachines and ventilation hoods. The ultimate goal of our testing program is to support manufacturers in highlighting the efficiencies of their products and encourage foodservice operators, owners, and specifiers to make more informed purchasing decisions.
The FSTC tests commercial appliances for California Energy Wise rebate program qualification, which offers incentives to California utility customers. As an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, the FSTC is also qualified to test commercial foodservice equipment like ovens, fryers, griddles, holding cabinets, steamers, and dishmachines for the nationwide ENERGY STAR® certification.
Manufacturers of regulated commercial appliances are required to meet state and federal standards for energy and water efficiency. We can test to the latest DOE standard, California Title 20 regulations, and numerous other state and federal codes and standards.
Whether it's recommending equipment design modifications for improved efficiency or testing a prototype before it's market ready, the FSTC can consult and collaborate with manufacturers to realize the best versions of their products.
The FSTC is the ideal place to host your next equipment demonstration for your customers. We have several fully-equipped kitchen cooklines and all the ancillary equipment necessary to help you make the perfect sales pitch and showcase your equipment in the best light.

The first step to a more energy-efficient operation is evaluating your current equipment and systems. An FSTC energy analyst can help make this process much easier by visiting your facility and examining the following energy- and water-using systems: cooking appliances, lighting, refrigeration, ventilation, water heating, sanitation/dishwashing, and water fixtures. After the visit, you will receive a detailed report with calculable energy-saving opportunities as well as best practice recommendations.
